Under Armour Tests Market with 3D printed shoes

Back on March 18th Under Amour released 96 pairs to the public if their 3D printed training shoe the Architech.  The shoes feature a 3D printed sole and outer design.  This step in footwear innovation is very cool to see because of the possibilities it can offer in customization.  Under Armour said their goal in making this shoe was to create a training shoe that still offered enough support for running.  They did this because surveys they did showed many people switching between training and running shoes for each type of exercise.  The shoes sold out in less than a week which was extremely impressive considering they were priced at $299.99 because of the technology involved in creating the shoe.  If this product become more streamlined and is more reasonable priced I would be interested in trying a 3D printed shoe to see if there is in fact any noticeable differences between them and the training shoes more commonly produced.

For more information on the technology of the 3D printed Architech here is an article from SI:

  1. This product is a very cool idea. It will give Under Armour a big step in terms of competing with Nike and the customizable shoes will allow UA to have competition with Nike's NikeID shoes.

  2. This shoe is really neat! Crazy to see that it sold out in the first week priced at $299.99. Don't think I could ever spend that much money on a pair of sneakers regardless of the technology.

  3. I think this shoe could really open up many doors for Under Armour. I would be interested to see down the line if they implemented this technology into basketball shoes, especially Steph Curry's signature line. If UA really wanted to make some money they would put this technology into a future signature model of his and I'm sure the shoe would fly off the shelves regardless of the price just because it is Steph Curry.
